Puerto Vallarta in the Film Industry

Puerto Vallarta and the Film Industry

Clearly Puerto Vallarta’s scenery was destined since its formation to become a dream place for the rich and famous, sooner or later to be discovered by the masses and becoming an ideal place with great recognition for the adventurous tourist.

During the 60’s decade and in spite of the infrastructure limitations, Director John Huston adventurous at heart opened the door that led the way throughout the years to a filmic production in Puerto Vallarta  with his well known  movie “The Night of the Iguana” in which one of the protagonists was Richard Burton; Elizabeth Taylor’s couple at that time. Both were charmed by this heavenly place and decided to buy a property and making it their temporary home.

The fame acquired by the production of “The Night of the Iguana” had such an impact that made Puerto Vallarta go from a small fishing town to a world known destination and became a great location to shoot featured films from which we can highlight the following:

  1. The Night of the Iguana (1964)
  2. The Domino Principle (1977)
  3. Herbie Goes Bananas (1980)
  4. Predator (1987)
  5. Revenge (1990)
  6. Blind Side (1993)
  7. Gunmen (1993)
  8. Deadly Swarm (2003)
  9. Puerto Vallarta Squeeze (2004)
  10. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008)

Due to this series of events, the local government created the Municipal Commission of the Filmic Industry and in 2003 the first Film Festival was held in Puerto Vallarta.

The Night of the Iguana

Interesting Fact: While doing the research for this blog story we came across a behind the scenes color documentary about the filming of The Night of the Iguana, the Puerto Vallarta footage is quite impressive of how the city looked back then. For some of us this is the first time we see Puerto Vallarta footage in color from those years.

We have included the documentary below for your enjoyment.
